Back Pain
Acute back pain typically begins suddenly and lasts less than a few months. It may be caused by heavy lifting or a fall. Chronic back pain that lasts more than three months is less common than acute pain.
Conditions often linked to back pain include:
- Muscle or ligament strain
- Bulging or ruptured discs
- Arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Skeletal irregularities
Neck Pain
Common causes of neck pain include:
- Bad posture
- Poor sleep habits
- Gritting your teeth
- Car accidents involving whiplash
- Nerve compression
- Sports injuries
- Repetitive motion
- Arthritis
- Meningitis
- Cancer
Neck pain treatment varies depending on the diagnosis. Treatment for neck pain may include:
- exercise, stretching, and physical therapy
- heat and ice therapy
- pain medication
- corticosteroid injections
- neck collar
- traction
- antibiotics if you have an infection
Joint Pain
A common cause of joint pain, also known as arthralgia, is an injury or any trauma that affects any of the ligaments and tendons surrounding the joint. Pain can also be the result of arthritis and infection. Pain within the joint is a common cause of knee pain, shoulder pain, and ankle pain. Some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), like chlamydia and gonorrhea, may lead to joint pain.
Medications are used to ease joint pain. Depending on your diagnosis, a number of treatments may be used, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, capsaicin cream, Cymbalta (duloxetine), and steroid joint injections. If you have a systemic disease, you might need to take a prescription drug that alters the function of your immune system. If you have septic arthritis, you will need to take antibiotics intravenously.
Physical therapy is another common treatment for joint pain. This focuses on maintaining joint range of motion and function and strengthening muscles surrounding the joint.
Heachache
Headaches can be divided into two types: primary and secondary. Primary headaches, which include migraines, cluster headaches, and tension aches, are stand-alone illnesses caused by the overactivity of – or problems associated with – structures in the head that are sensitive to pain.
These structures include muscles, nerves, and blood vessels of not only the head but also the neck. Headaches can also be caused by chemical changes in the brain.
Secondary headaches occur when another condition stimulates the pain-sensitive nerves of the head. A wide range of factors can cause secondary headaches, including alcohol-induced hangovers, brain tumors, blood clots, brain bleeds, traumatic brain injury, glaucoma, influenza, and dehydration.
Cancer Pain
Cancer pain typically occurs whenever a tumor presses against bone, nerves, or organs. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy used to treat cancer can also pain. Cancer pain is treatable. Most cancer patients find pain relief from a combination of prescription drugs. Some medications are general pain relievers, while other drugs target particular types of pain.
Arthritis
Common types of arthritis can be caused by a reduction in the normal amount of cartilage tissue.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is generally caused by wear and tear over time. An injury to the joints can worsen the natural breakdown of cartilage tissue.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder, which happens when your immune system attacks the tissues of your body. These attacks affect the synovium, which is a soft tissue that produces a fluid that feeds the cartilage and lubricates the joints.
Arthritis treatment seeks to minimize pain and joint damage and improve the function of your joints. Treatment for arthritis may involve:
- Medication
- Non-pharmacologic therapies
- physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Splints or braces
- Weight loss
- Surgery
Fibromyalgia
While the cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, risk factors include traumatic injury, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune disorders, such as lupus, and genetic factors. There is no cure, but medications, exercise, acupuncture, and behavioral therapy can help relieve symptoms and improve sleep quality.
Extremity Pain
Extremity pain, such as pain in your arms, shoulders, legs, hands, and feet, has many causes, including trauma and infection, wear-and-tear, dehydration, and muscle fatigue or strain. Often pain in your extremities could indicate an issue in another part of your body, such as a nerve issue, or an underlying condition. The first step in treating extremity pain is to get an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms. Depending on your diagnosis, your pain specialist can determine your best treatment options.
Sports-Related Injuries
Sports injuries occur while participating in sports or during exercise. Common sports injuries include:
- Muscle strains and sprains
- Knee injuries
- Shoulder injuries
- Back pain
- Shin splints
- Tendinitis
- Dislocations
- Fractures
If you suffer a sports injury, your goal should be preventing further damage to the affected area, reduce inflammation, and reduce pain. A common treatment is the RICE method. This includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the affected area to reduce swelling. Immobilization may be necessary to prevent further damage while the injury heals.
When you have pain in a peripheral joint, such as shoulder, hip, wrist, or ankle, the hip, shoulder, elbow, wrist, foot, or ankle, joint injections can be used to diagnose the exact source of your pain and provide pain relief. Steroid injections, using ultrasound to guide the precise placement of the needle, can reduce inflammation and stop pain for months.
Physical therapy is an important part of treatment for sports injuries. Therapy helps the affected area regain function and strength so you can safely return to playing sports.
Disc Herniations
Disc herniations are typically caused by gradual wear and tear, known as disc degeneration. As you get older, the discs become less flexible and more likely to tear or rupture with strains or twists. While herniated discs can lead to severe pain, the right treatment can relieve your pain.
Avoiding movements that cause pain and sticking with an exercise and medication regimen are effective forms of treatment. Other options include physical therapy and surgery.
