Visiting a Pain Management Clinic

Visiting a Pain Management Clinic

An estimated 100 million people in the United States suffer from chronic pain. Among the most common causes of chronic pain is arthritis. If you or a loved one suffers from this debilitating condition, you live in constant pain and discomfort, and your range of movement is probably greatly affected. The condition also affects your sleep and virtually every other aspect of your life.

In your quest to seek relief from the pain, you have likely tried several options, probably with varying degrees of success. Still, you need more help: help that is effective and long-lasting. One avenue that can provide a reprieve from the constant pain and discomfort that torment you is a pain management clinic.

More than a medical clinic that offers only medication for pain, a pain management clinic offers several services for ongoing pain relief and pain management, including physical therapy, massage therapy, chiropractic care, physician consultations, and other services. In this fashion, a good pain management clinic provides holistic and interrelated treatment to help you live productively while also dealing with your chronic condition and the pain and immobility your arthritis causes.

Here at AllCare Health & Pain, our mission is to provide you with the quality and effective care and treatment you need to help you along your road to recovery. We are a team of highly experienced pain management professionals who genuinely care about you as a person. In fact, we develop our pain management solutions and treatment options with a focus on you as a person, and you can trust that we will tailor our services to your specific needs to treat you more effectively.

What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a condition that causes chronic swelling or inflammation in the joints. All the areas around the joint, including cartilage, ligaments and tendons, and other tissue, can be affected and contribute to the condition. So far, medical professionals have identified more than 100 maladies affecting the joints and surrounding tissue.

Overall, arthritis falls into two main categories:

  • Osteoarthritis – The most common of the types of arthritis, osteoarthritis is also referred to as “degenerative joint disease,” and some people call it “wear and tear” arthritis. Whatever the term, it means that the cartilage in a joint has eroded, and the bone beneath has begun to change. This form of arthritis most commonly affects the joints in the hands as well as the knees and hips. However, it can occur in virtually any joint in the body.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis – Unlike osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an autoimmune disorder. Essentially, the body is attacking otherwise healthy tissue in the joints, causing degeneration and causing painful inflammation.

The Symptoms of Arthritis

Those unfortunate enough to suffer from either type of arthritis know all too well the debilitating pain it causes. Arthritis affects your joints, and even the slightest bit of movement can bring you to tears. Not only that, but you also likely suffer from throbbing pain and other discomforts every minute of the day.

People suffering from osteoarthritis most commonly experience the following:

  • Joint stiffness, particularly in the morning or after sitting for a while
  • Pain or a constant aching in or around the joint
  • A decrease in their range of movement or mobility
  • Intense swelling of the joint

As their range of movement and mobility decreases, arthritis victims can also suffer a lack of coordination and even an inability to take care of basic necessities, such as eating and drinking, bathing, and going to the bathroom.

People who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis also suffer from many of the same symptoms as osteoarthritis, with morning stiffness and joint pain chief among them. However, because rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder, sufferers can also experience additional symptoms that include warmness and tingling in the joint and surrounding areas. Furthermore, other symptoms may arise in other areas of the body, such as the eyes and skin, the heart, and other internal organs.

Additionally, autoimmune diseases and other disorders can cause inflammatory conditions in the joints and the connective tissue. Some of these conditions include the following:

  • Gout
  • Lupus
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Scleroderma

A person can also experience reactive arthritis from an infection in an adjacent area as well as infectious arthritis that arises from infection by bacteria or fungi, a virus, or a parasite.

How a Pain Management Clinic Can Help

There is a difference between pain treatment and pain management. You can treat pain, for example, with over-the-counter medications if you cut yourself or have a headache once in a while. You can even treat severe and chronic pain with medication, but the relief is only temporary, and you can develop a reliance on or addiction to the drugs.

Designed to offer a more effective approach, pain management clinics focus on diagnosing the cause of the pain as well as providing therapy, treatment, and consultation services to help the sufferer manage their pain and live with their condition.

Commonly, pain management providers fall into two categories:

  • Those that focus on treating specific types of pain, for instance, back pain or neck pain.
  • Those that focus on the person as a whole through an interdisciplinary approach.

Both types of clinics may have a variety of professionals on staff, including licensed physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and more.
